Matthew 5

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom - They have the kingdom already in present possession, as well as in hope.

Blessed are the poor in spirit - Such as are brought to nothing in their own eyes, and lie at God's foot as beggars.

Blessed are the poor in spirit - They who are convinced of their spiritual poverty, and their need of divine grace.

Blessed are the poor in spirit - Those who are deeply sensible of their spiritual poverty, and of their utter inability to help themselves.

Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God. The pure in heart have a spiritual sight of God. This is the highest happiness.

Blessed are the poor in spirit - An empty vessel can be filled, but a full vessel must be emptied before it can hold more.

Happy are the poor in spirit - They who are unfeignedly penitent, they who are truly convinced of sin.

This saying is peculiar to Christianity; and it is more largely insisted upon than any of the rest.

Nowhere do we imitate God more than in showing mercy.

Hunger and thirst, here, are expressive of strong desire for holiness and righteousness.

Meekness is patience in the reception of injuries. It is neither meanness nor a surrender of our rights, nor cowardice.

Those that mourn thus shall be comforted through the merciful Saviour where sins may be forgiven.

A humble opinion of ourselves; to be sensible that we are sinners, and have no righteousness of our own.

Yet the saints, though thus used, or rather abused, are happy; for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

They not only shall be, and more manifestly appear to be, the sons of God hereafter; but they are...so now.

Happy they are, for they shall see God; in this life, enjoying communion with him.

The happiness of such persons is this, that they shall obtain mercy: from man...and from God, through Christ.

Happy souls are these, for they shall be filled: with that righteousness, and with all other good things.

Such who are possessed of it, and exercise it, are well pleasing to God; when disconsolate, he comforts them.

These, how sorrowful and distressed soever they may appear, are blessed for they shall be comforted.

These are pronounced 'blessed', for this reason, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
