Psalms 23

The Lord is my shepherd - The relation of a shepherd to his flock represents God's tender care over his people.

The Lord is my shepherd - If I have God for my shepherd, I need not seek further. He can and will supply all my wants.

The Lord is my shepherd - Jehovah himself is the speaker's shepherd. This is personal faith appropriating divine care.

The Lord is my shepherd - He cares for me as a shepherd cares for his sheep, providing all I need for body and soul.

The Lord is my shepherd - He guides, feeds, and protects me. I can want nothing that is truly good for me.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death - It is but the shadow. The shadow of a dog cannot bite; the shadow of a sword cannot kill.

He restoreth my soul - When the soul grows sorrowful, he revives it; when it is sinful, he sanctifies it; when it is weak, he strengthens it.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures - The Christian life has its green pastures, its Sabbaths, its ordinances, its joyful experiences.

The Lord is my shepherd. We must have faith to appropriate the promise.

He calls God his Shepherd, not simply because he sustains all the world, but because he acknowledges himself to be one of his flock.

Brings back my life from destruction; and converts my soul from sin, that it may not eternally perish.

All real penitents, all true believers; all who obediently follow his example, abstaining from every appearance of evil.

God condescends to call himself the Shepherd of his people, and his followers are considered as a flock under his guidance and direction.

It is but the shadow of death: the shadow of a serpent will not sting, nor the shadow of a sword kill.

The way of duty is the truly pleasant way.

The Lord gives quiet and contentment in the mind, whatever the lot is.

In these words, the believer is taught to express his satisfaction in the care of the great Pastor.
